I did it

croquignoles by vanilla

The Rest of the Story

I had completed the recipe, rolled and cut the dough.  Meanwhile, I had placed the pan with the cooking oil on the stove to heat.  The recipe had advised me to "fry until golden brown."  I dropped the first piece of dough into the grease and had I cooked it for eternity it would never have turned "golden brown" for it instantly turned black as smoke rose from the vessel!

Okay, then.  Live and learn.  I turned off the fire, removed the blackened croquignole.  After the grease had cooled to an appropriate level, I returned the dark rascal to the pot and finished cooking it. Lesson learned.  Cooking the remaining goodies went well and they were delicious.

Of course, I ate the black one.  Waste not, want not.

And believe me, I want no more black croquignoles.  (Though it wasn't bad.)

And I wasn't invited?

Vee, but you have an open invitation, always good.

My culinary skills need much improvement. With Sylvia's arm in a sling, I'm working on those skills.

Chuck, JoAnn says, "If you can read, you can cook." Yeah, right. Anyway, I suppose we need some rudimentary skill in the area for just such situations as you unfortunately find yourself in right now. I pray healing for Sylvia, and good health for you both while you are in the kitchen.

Kudos to you - I would never attempt such a thing.

Fried dough is an Italian staple and I ate quite a bit of it growing up - zeppoli -yum. Struffola, canoli - all hit the hot oil. I personally have not immersed any foodstuffs in hot oil for at least 30 years. Slicking a pan with olive oil is as far as I go.

Grace, so I had to look up these pastries. The struffoli appeals to me (salivating) but is a bit too labor-intensive for my cooking skills. And we lack some of the essential ingredients in our pantry.

Perhaps we are more care-less in our dietary habits, but BBBH does use oil for cooking. Not daily, of course, but often.

Oh WOW! I am impressed! Good work, Vanilla. I only wish we could all sample them. :)

I think I like eating better than cooking.

Lin, a croquignole, a cup of coffee, and conversation with you would be a triple delight.
(I prefer consumption over preparation, too.)

You must really like them. That's a lot of work and mess

Sharkey, actually relatively simple, else beyond my skill levels. I looked at a recipe for cannoli and that is definitely beyond my pay grade.
