Rabbit

We have a 3500 square foot fenced area in our backyard. The original thought was that it would make a nice place for Cookie to roam unattended. The cottontail that lives in the area thinks it is a nice place to lay her bunnies. Some years I caught her at it and ran her off. Some years Cookie got the bunnies.

This spring Mrs. Cottontail built her nest and populated it before we were aware of what was going on. Cookie, though, guided us directly to the nest. We pulled him off and banished him from his yard, thinking, "Oh, well, a few weeks and the bunnies will be grown and gone."

Yesterday, just as darkness enveloped our world, I spotted the doe in the middle of the yard. Not really expecting much, I aimed the camera and snapped this somewhat astonishing picture.

Hi Vanilla,

Bunny must feel safe in your yard in spite of Cookie. You are living a chapter out of Watership Down.

last year raccoons overran our yard, gnawed a hole through the roof of my outside office, and destroyed scores of books stored there.

We live-trapped and removed food and water sources and thought we had defeated them... Ha! This year they are back as strong as ever.

Enjoy your bunnies, at least they don't eat books.

You can't beat 'em, Vanilla. You just can't beat 'em. I know ALL about that stuff after the raccoon invasion of last fall. Ugh.

Jim, no, she's real enough, all right.

Grace, the rabbit, Grace.

John, annoying as they are around the garden, the rabbits aren't as destructive as your raccoons. Books? I'd be really upset.

Lin, yeah, they're everywhere, they're everywhere!

She may have actually been there first, and then you came in to build your nest on the property :)

Vee, although I am not so well versed in rabbitology, my reptilian studies have taught me that turtles return to the place of their birth to lay their eggs. It seems reasonable to me to believe that the rabbits were calling this place "home" long before I came on the scene.
