Never on a Sunday

The movie "Never on a Sunday" ( Pote Tin Kyriaki) starring Melina Mercouri was released in 1960.  Because of the subject matter and whatever else concerned people at the time, the flick was somewhat controversial.  I at first thought I would post the song as done by Connie Francis, as that was an immense hit in the early sixties, but chose rather to present the star of the movie in her version, even though most of us do not understand Greek.

Well, it is Greek to me; but I think the lady has a nice voice and the song is beautiful.  As I mentioned yesterday, the sheet music jacket claimed this was "the most recorded song ever."  The composer, Manos Hadjidakis, won the Academy Award for Best Song.  Miss Mercouri was nominated for Best Actress, and though she did not win the Oscar, she was named Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival.

Melina Mercouri 1920 - 1994 RIP

Manos Hadjidakis 1925 - 1994 RIP

Love the song, never saw the movie, maybe I should search Netflicks for it. My favorite version is by Pink Martini

It is a very catchy song. I have a recording of 30 years of Academy Award winning songs, so I know it. Never saw the movie, but I guessed it was a bit naughty for the times.

Shelly, the movie, as I recall, was a bit controversial in the day; probably because of the profession that the Mercouri character pursued.

Grace, the link you sent failed me, but I will find Pink’s version once I get caught up after four days away from the blogosphere.

Shark, it is interesting to look back and assess “where we were" vis a vis “where we have come.”
