A Fool for Christ

I have a younger sister, Ilene, who celebrates her birthday on this date.  I also have a good friend, Teresa, who was born on August 2.  They share this day with Basil the Blessed, fool for Christ.  St. Basil was not born on August 2, but rather it was the day of his death.*  He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Basil's lifestyle centered around his activities of shoplifting and giving the proceeds to the poor, not only to help the needy, but to shame the greedy as well.  It is said that he went about his business wearing no clothing, but I mean, in Russia?
A key example of Basil's odd or "foolish" behavior is this.  He chastised Tsar Ivan the Terrible for his lack of attention in church, and his failure to care for or nurture the poor.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f2/Vasbla4.jpgWe are told that this Tsar was a pallbearer at Basil's funeral.  Basil is interred in St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.

Happy birthday, Ilene and also a happy birthday to Teresa.

*August 2 would be August 15, new style.

Hoping sis has a happy birthday, but thinking she would not compare at all to the church version of Robin Hood.

While seeing pix from Moscow, I've often wondered why Basil was canonized. Now I have that knowledge, but how can I transform that into wisdom? Suggestions welcomed.

Vee, no comparison at all. It is just that she was born on St. Basil's day.

Chuck it is a conundrum. If I think of anything I will let you know.

Thanks for the birthday wish and for adding to my knowledge base. I did not know that I was born on Saint Basil's day.

Ilene, you are welcome; and I guess there is always something that can be added to the knowledge base.

So would the feminine of Basil be Basila or Basilica? If there were a St. Basil's Basilica would that be his church or his sister's? OK, I'll stop now.

Sharkey, maybe Basillier? Oh, be nice, vanilla.

This leads me to realize why there is a Basil, Switzerland.

Sheshebens, maybe the names of the city and the guy were derived from the same source. Basel, the city, predates this man by several hundred years. Thanks for stopping by and come again!
