Decadent: Language Rant Continues

DECADENT: corrupt, decayed, rotten, spoiled, weak, limp, faint, putrid, foul, bad, nasty, vile, refuse, unsound, unhealthy, bad, faulty, ruins, depraved, backward.

Many food products , not just the one used here for illustration, are being advertised as Decadent! treats. Above are a few of the synonyms we found, thanks to Merriam-Webster.

So, Why would anyone buy, use, eat a product that is corrupt, decayed, rotten, spoiled, putrid, nasty, vile ... ?

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! --Isaiah 5:20

Decadence can refer to a personal trait. Used to describe a person's lifestyle. Concise Oxford Dictionary: "a luxurious self-indulgence"

Grace-- Lifestyle of self-indulgence: rotten, spoiled. ;)

I could dearly use a little luxurious self-indulgence. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself well - materially and otherwise. It is actually a trait that should be nurtured more. It is not as common as one might think reading the newspapers.

Self-righteous self-sacrifice is the lowest of the low - but I'm off topic with that line.

Bitter sweet only good for chocolate! :)

Grace-- A little self-indulgence is greatly to be desired!

Self-sacrifice in the interest of others can be a virtue; self-righteousness always a vice.

VanillaSeven-- I do love my chocolagte bitter sweet. Thanks for visiting.

The first definition in my Meriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary agrees with the concepts in your post. However, it also says, "characterized by or appealing to self-indulgence."

I see the two as closely related. Nice post and a provocative question. You have elicited some interesting responses.

That's my favorite kind of chocolate too.

Chuck-- Thanks for chiming in on this. How about let's all rip into a big old chunk of dark, dark chocolate for a little self-indulgence? *nom, nom*

I'm with you on this subject especially since the product you used for illustration is a spoiled product on purpose. That is just gross, we should all eat more chocolate.
