Our First President

Gilbert Stuart Williamstown Portrait of George Washington.jpg

February 4, 1789  The electoral college unanimously selected George Washington to serve as the First President of the United States of America.

His term of office officially began March 4, 1789.  He was sworn in on April 30.  Washington was reelected in 1792 and again received 100 percent of the electoral vote.  He remains to this day the only President to receive unanimous support of the electoral college.

What a great man he was- the legacy he left will go on as long as this country does.

Shelly, your comment this morning is number 8100 on STSTT. No prizes, but thank you for being a loyal supporter!

What I always wanted to know is why he never wanted to go home. I lived in Old Town Alexandria and all over are plaques that say "Washington slept here" - considering that Mount Vernon was/is only a few miles down the road, I'm sure his horse knew the way home - he could have napped on the way.

Grace, interesting conundrum. As many places that sport signs saying "Washington slept here," one wonders if he ever went home. :-D

He and his compatriots were Renaissance Men, in the very best of ways... a pity more of us aren't as broadly educated (and often self-educated) as they were.

Jacquelineand, few people, it seems to me, have a thirst for learning. "Training" to achieve a higher-paying job perhaps, but learning for its own sake is all but a dead issue these days.

It was an interesting era (my favorite of history studies). Of course, Washington was a human and not perfect, but he was quite an amazing person. One of the few heroes I have left.

Sharkbytes, in spite of his flaws, he was a man of many parts, and heroic in my estimation.
