Fair Time, '16

Hey, Ma, wanna go to the fair?

Sure, but we'll have to put on shoes.

 Plev-nee, Ma, Plev-nee

 Judgin' the livestock, Pa.

BBBH always heads to the goats.

JoLynn thinks this fella got gypped out of his ears.

 Er-a-er-er! These guys were loud!

Tipton's new approach to waste disposal.
I may have more to say about this later.

And that is our visit to the fair, 2016.

Fair Time 2015: Animals

I have often told some kid who is whining about something being "not fair" that "fair" is where the 4-H kids go to show their pigs.  And so it is.

Personally, though, I don't find pigs to be terribly photogenic, so mostly we concentrated on cuteness. I mean, how cute is this?

Not to mention this.

Stylin'.

Really styling.

We passed a cage of black-on-white rabbits.  BBBH exclaimed, "Oh, aren't the bunnies cute?"
"Looks like supper to me," says I.  So much for harmony and togetherness at the fair.  There are no horse pictures because although I walked through the stable area, occasionally saying, "Nice horse!" to the horse, I stayed a good four feet from the stall.  I don't much do horses.  This year's kine crop didn't impress me much, either.

Back to the Fair

Upon a day not long ago,
and here I am only guessing,
a red hen laid the perfect egg.
It hatched.
A chick.
It scratched.
It ate and grew.
It morphed.
A rooster.

Now the perfect bird.
Mr. Rhode Island Red
is judged.
A win!
 A blue ribbon
on his pen.

I got out and about fairly early so I could be present at the goat judging.  It is only fitting that an Old Goat whose bones and tissues developed on milk of the goat would find this of interest.

Young Garrett here with one of his does and one of his many ribbons of the morning.
In two classes he won both Champion and Reserve Champion.  Also this Alpine doe won in two classes, 2yr old milk doe and with her kid as Mother and Daughter.

An entertaining morning for me, and a great bicycle ride to and from the Fairgrounds!

Off to the Fair!

 Where have we been?
We've been to the fair!

 To the fair?
What saw we there?
Little Lamancha goats.
Aren't they cute?
No ears.
And lots of other animals, ovine, bovine, porcine, and feathered.

Then after Sunday brunch we return to the car
to find this little green passenger awaiting a ride.
Green?  I have seen black spiders, and brown, grey spiders and white.
But green?  Not until now.

The American Lamancha is a breed of dairy goat.  While most goats have long, droopy ears, Lamanchas have a mere button on each side of the head.

This Seems Fair

It is 4-H Fair week in Tipton County.   Yesterday afternoon was gorgeous, so we went to the fair!  For years, I have told kids who were whining that "It's not fair!" that "fair" is where the kids go to show their pigs.  And it is true-- pigs and so much more.

In her considered opinion, to go to the fair and not have an elephant ear would just not be fair!

 We saw some fowl.

This lad's bird was being judged.  I think he did not like everything he heard.  But I really liked his shirt!

 We saw lots of rabbits.

 A barnful of swine.

 Some sheep

 and some goats.

 Some bovine critters

and a departing shot for Lin.  She'll get it.

A number of the kids showing their livestock were children of kids I taught when they were in junior high.  I got to visit with some of those former students.  I was also collared by a local and introduced to my Congresswoman.  She has a winning smile and a firm handshake.

The Fair runs through Wednesday, July 17.
