La Gata

My sister has a cat, a very pretty cat, long slender neck and graceful moves.  Cookie is a refugee from Hurricane Maria which devastated Puerto Rico in September 2017.  It is reported that the cat seems grateful for the largess bestowed upon her, but she does not reciprocate with any kind of overt demonstration of affection. The following is a middle-of-the night creation I "dreamed up" and sent to Ilene a few weeks ago.

I dreamed last night about a cat named Cookie.
I was visiting my sister in the Garden State
Resting peacefully in her guest room
The door a bit ajar; I don't want to fumble with knobs
In the middle of the night.

Somewhere in the wee hours I heard a gentle tap on my door
"David,"  Ilene whispered, "I can't find my cat."
"Don't panic," I replied.  "Flip on the night light."
"The cat's been sleeping with me for the past three nights."
"NO!" the glare of the overhead light hit my sleepy eyes.

Ilene stood, amazed, appalled, moved  toward the bed.
Cat like a flash crawled deep down next to my feet.
"Let her be," I said.  But I could see that Sis was crushed.
"She's okay.  We'll talk in the morning.
"Nice Cookie." I crooned. " La Gata, Senora Gata, duerme ahora."

Whiplash

I went from an elementary student myself on Tuesday to principal of an elementary school on Wednesday. That is a time warp that will give you whiplash.  So where today?

August 20, 2050.  My great-great-great grandson will start school today.  Of course brick-and-mortar, steel-and-glass schools exist only in the memories of a very few and dwindling number of people alive today. Books are remembered primarily as resource-wasting cumbersome items that required more storage space than the archaic and now useless knowledge contained in them merited. Of course, too, people had functional limbs called "legs" which enabled them to move from place to place.  Imagine that.  Well, how silly, and again wasteful of resources when all sustenance can so easily be piped into the cell in which this youngster lives; all waste and detritus piped out.  Knowledge, learning, lore: piped in through the ether.

Now imagine the first day of school.  It cannot be done.  Our history and understanding will not allow us to comprehend the world in which our progeny will live a mere three decades down the road.  Doubt me?  Think back three decades.  Do you have 1985 fixed in your mind? Now how does today look compared to that time?  Recognition through memory only and today's children cannot conceive of the primitive lifestyles we practiced a mere thirty and forty years ago, nor can we imagine the world of the really quite near future.

Of course, blessedly I won't be here to see 2050.

Ciao.

Word of the day: progeny.

God's Overlooked Marvels

Discounting the quality of the photography, please note that the penny is nestled among teeny, tiny blue flowers in the lawn.  The blooms are smaller than forget-me-not, and how oft might I have overlooked them, I know not.
The flowers are quite exquisite, should you get close enough to examine them.  Blue-violet petals, white center with yellow stamens.
We tend to ignore such specimens in favor of the much, much larger and gaudier pansies, and we are even likely to notice the dandelions in their gaudy sunshine splendor.
Yet this begs the question, why did the Creator provide such pretty yet such small beauties that they normally fall outside the range of our perception?
I fancy that I know the answer.

The elves and fairies, and perhaps the gnomes as well, live beneath the glorious blossoms of which we are so fond, never having the pleasure of their full beauty, as they are merely shade to them, the firmament, so to speak, beneath which they live.
So God has provided for them wonderful beauties, proportionate to their own size, and He has placed them at their level, such that they may enjoy them in their completeness.

So step lightly; if you were to crush the flowers, they will spring back.  But above all, do not walk on the wee inhabitants for whom they were made.

It is probable that the plants I enjoyed here in the lawn
yesterday afternoon are corn speedwell.  My neighbors
haven't the flowers in their lawns that I have in mine,
for they pay some guy to spread chemicals around their
yards.

#:3& in the Morning

The irresplendent pink unicorn landed in front of me, folded its wings, and skidded to a stop.  “In what manner may I resist you?” he asked.

“Be away with you, you rhinosterous pseudoequine phantasmagorical fig pudding of my imagination,” I shouted.

“And to think,” the Unicorn replied sweetly, “I was ready to desist you from this slime-pit in which you swallow.  Tsk, tsk.”

At the gutterance of the word “swallow” there alighted on the sparkling horn of the beast a small middish bird with forked tail.  “You sang?  I assist you, beak and caul.”

“Explain,” said the imaginary beast, “to this hard-polled ninny that our efforts can distract him from these pickles into which he has fallen.”

“Your good will, Sirrah, is all that is required,” said the Swallow.  “We insist to be of surface.”

And at the squeaking of the word “surface,” aghast fixture opened beneath the creatures, and both were engorged in a trice.

I opened my left eye and peered through the blur of sheep captive within it.  The green numerals on the bedside clock looked like this:  #:3&

It would be mere hours before time to rise.  And shine.  But right now I gotta pee.  Really bad.

History and Fantasy

Landsberg, Bavaria
December 20, 1924

A) Today following 264 days of imprisonment for his conviction for treason, Adolph Hitler was released. During his time in Landsberg, he wrote Mein Kampf. He was assisted by his personal factotum, Rudolf Hess.  Hitler’s time in prison was much like a vacation at a posh country club, for viands were abundant and fit for a king, visiting privileges for his friends and cronies were quite generous.

B) Today, following 264 days of imprisonment for his conviction for treason, his appeals having been exhausted, Adolph Hitler was executed.

Which is history and which is fantasy?

Results:

Scenario A) Twenty-one years later, the entire world in turmoil and conflict and following the deaths of millions, Hitler himself died, a suicide.

Scenario B) Who knows?
