In the spirit of the season of "peace and goodwill," I won't be offended
if you wish me "Happy Holidays!" Please don't be offended when I wish
you a "Merry Christmas!" Thank you.
Grace, perhaps I am simply dense, but I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would be offended when given sincere good wishes. And yes, I do understand that there are people who subscribe to different belief systems from my own-- lots of them-- but the wish is for their happiness at a certain calendar time of year, not a criticism of their beliefs.
Origin of the word, "Holiday" according to answers.com: "The word 'Holiday' comes from 'Holy Day'. In ancient times these days were given to workers so they could go to church and worship. Later is was called Holiday and did not necessarily mean attendance at worship."

It is a crazy kind of tightrope, isn't it? All you want to do is be kind. Unless I know to the contrary, it's Merry Christmas from me too.
